The journey of the Enviroschools programme has been driven by the kaupapa of creating a sustainable world. It began with the seed of an idea about young people creating healthy peaceful, sustainable schools, and has developed into a diverse and rich network of learning and action in communities nationwide. In the Bay of Plenty, there are now 80 Enviroschools - 38 per cent of all schools in the region. The team of the Garden and Artfest is actively involved assisting in the process, finding resources and offering expertise whenever possible.
Schools sign up to the programme when they feel ready and are supported by staff at Environment Bay of Plenty and EastBay REAP or Tauranga City Council.
Each school or kindergarten is encouraged to empower their students to carry out sustainable actions that cross all areas of school life, with a strong emphasis on community involvement. During the past year, vegetable gardens have seen a revival in many Bay of Plenty Enviroschools and they are always looking for willing helpers from the community.
Here is a list of the Enviroschools in your neighbourhood that might appreciate some help. If you would like to lend a hand with a vegetable garden or shade house project at any of these schools/kindergartens, please contact Stephanie Twaddle at Environment Bay of Plenty: phone 0800 368 267.
