In another Festival first, a series of speakers will share their knowledge with you – tackling topics from garden bugs to roses, fungi to fragrant gardens, heritage plants and edible backyards.
Brunch with the effervescent Peta Mathias to hear her tales from Marrakech. Meet Ruud Kleinpaste, ‘the bug man’, and get the garden low-down from Linda Hallinan, NZ Gardner editor at large.
Educational and entertaining the new speaker series will be a popular source of knowledge for a broad audience.

 |  |  | Best in Show with Lynda Hallinan Described as owner of a few too many cats... an urban greenie... and a general gardening obsessive, Lynda Hallinan has seen her fair share of gardens! more info | The Fragrant Garden with Marilyn Wightman A garden full of scent – from flowers or foliage – is a paradise garden indeed. Marilyn’s 23-year-old 1ha garden, has a focus on fragrant plants, and also provides seed and propagation material for her mail-order business and garden centre. In this talk, she will discuss plant choices to create scent through the seasons. Saturday 13th November 11.15am $9.90 | Sub-tropical Sensations with Robin Booth Robin has been developing Wharepuke Subtropical Garden in the Bay of Islands for 17 years. His interests are eclectic, and include subtropical fruiting plants, bromeliads, orchids and dry climate plants. A garden writer and consultant, Robin will bring some samples of his more unusual specimens. Saturday 13th November 10am $9.90 |  |  |  | Sustainable Solutions with Trish Waugh Chelsea Gold Medal garden designer Trish Waugh outlines ideas and tips on sustainable gardening. Trish is developing her own garden to be water-wise, and encourages clients to work with natural systems to create gardens that are not only beautiful, but also eco-smart. Saturday 13th November 1.45pm $9.90 | The Edible Garden with Andrew Boylan Andrew and his team put together a show garden at Ellerslie this year, and won Silver Distinction for its combination of food plants and style. Co-owner of Incredible Edibles, Andrew will talk about how to achieve a “grazing garden”. Saturday 13th November 3pm $9.90 | Saying it with Roses with Lloyd Chapman The old roses collection at Trinity Farm garden near Otaki numbered some 1500 during Lloyd’s ownership of the property. And his “ongoing love affair” continues unabated. Lloyd now writes about heritage roses, and has recently returned from a rose tour of Iran. Sunday 14th November 10.15am $9.90 |  |  |  | Fabulous Fungi with Shirley Kerr Shirley became interested in fungi through photography. Using a selection of her award-winning images, she will open our eyes to the gems that raise their heads, often overnight, in our gardens, roadsides and bushes. Sunday 14th November 11.30am $9.90 | Heritage Food Plants with Kay Baxter Through her work with the Koanga Institute, Kay has spent years saving our heritage food plants so they remain part of our everyday lives. In this session, she discusses her journey and techniques for the home gardener, and those interested in improving their health. Sunday 14th November 12.45pm $9.90 | Going Native with Mark Dean Native plants have been Mark’s passion – and business, for decades. He founded the nursery, Naturally Native NZ Plants and is currently the country’s largest specialist native grower. Mark will look at the landscaping potential of some of his favourites, and explain why using native plants has advantages. Sunday 14th November 2pm $9.90 |
