Another Green World: Elizabeth Thomson – From 6 November

Looking up into Thomson’s North Star Parterre, one of the works in Another Green World, you can almost imagine strolling along crisp gravel pathways bordered by endless rows of roses.

The intricacy and orderliness of her sculpted 7 x 2 metre aluminium installation, mirrors the formality and symmetry of the traditional parterre.  It emanates from the from Atrium’s central wall in neat rows, paths and quadrants. North Star Parterre is based on the Lady Norwood Rose Garden in Wellington’s Botanical Garden.  This theme fits well with Tauranga’s biennial Garden and ArtFest.

Thomson’s preferred subject is Nature.  She captures the chaos and order found, at an often scientific level, in her intricate sculptural work. Her innovative use of materials add dimension and movement and include moulded or engraved fibreglass, glass beads, bronze and zinc. They draw us into the sculptural qualities of her work with its hard and soft surfaces, roughness and smoothness, opacity and transparency.

In Bloom: Karl Maughan - 2 October – 28 November
Karl Maughan has been painting gardens since the 1980s, a consistently explored theme that has made him nationally and internationally recognised.

Maughan works from photographs he has taken of his chosen gardens in differing lights.

The sheer scale of his works makes painting outside impossible.  Often the finished canvas is made up of elements of several gardens pieced together to create the effect he wants – along with his trademark rhododendrons.

From a distance, his paintings take on a photographic realism.  But, viewed up close, the images dissolve into abstraction through Maughan’s considered application and layering of paint.

Digging For Victory

With rationing, and the fear of food shortages during WW2, men and women were empowered to become vegetable gardeners. Slogans such as ‘dig for victory’ and ‘our food is fighting’ were common.

Today, as concerns over food quality and supply emerge, ‘victory gardens that feed communities’ are again growing. This exhibition is held in conjunction with Tauranga Heritage.
