About Garden & Artfest
The Festival is run by the New Zealand Garden and Art Festival Trust (established in 2001) after the first two festivals in1997 and 2000, and is a not-for-profit trust based firmly in the local community.
The first six Garden&ArtFests (GAFs) (1997, 2000, 2002 and 2004) were initially run by volunteers, and then by a sponsored events manager in 2006 and 2008. The trust then appointed a professional director for the 2010 and 2012 Festivals (formally Jo Bond/Arne Herrmann and now John Beech, formally of Creative Tauranga).
The Trust was established for the purpose of promoting and improving the advancement of education, skill, knowledge and enjoyment of gardens and arts in the BoP and NZ.
The GAF features private gardens from Katikati to Te Puke, as well as a myriad of events. These include a workshop and speaker series, Art exhibitions and installations, landscape design elements, sculpture, floral art, and an outreach programme for schools.
The GAF has been given Tauranga’s prestigious Flagship Event status by the City and now attracts more than 20,000 people to its events.
Together with John, the 2012 Festival Trustees are: Kate Barry-Piceno, Nicky Averill, Deb van Loghem, Sally Holland, Vicki Davis and Michelle McDonnell.
